Scot who booted in Greggs bakery door at 1.45am told cops he'd been desperate for a sausage roll

A Scot who booted in the glass door of a Greggs bakery at 1.45am later told cops he’d been desperate for a sausage roll.

Matthew Devlin smashed the door of the closed outlet on Edinburgh’s South Clerk Street.

Two hours later Devlin, 31, went to nearby St Leonards police station and admitted he was responsible for the damage.

Telling cops it was his urgent need for one of Greggs’ pastries which prompted his actions, the painter and decorator was arrested.

Devlin appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Monday after previously admitting a charge of wilfully damaging the bakery’s door on August 18.

Fiscal depute Emma Laing said: “The accused attended at the police station at 3.35am and admitted he had vandalised Greggs.

“He told officers he kicked and smashed the door because he wanted a sausage roll.

“He was arrested at 3.55am on suspicion of vandalism.”

Devlin also appeared for sentencing on a charge of possessing a knife in a public place on March 4.

Ms Laing said officers had searched Devlin, who appeared “heavily intoxicated”, in the city’s Restalrig Road South at 12.10am.

She said a small kitchen knife with a three-inch blade was recovered from his trouser pocket.

Ms Laing: “The accused’s excuse was that it was for chopping cauliflower.”

Devlin, representing himself, told the hearing he’d been cooking with a friend and “went out for more beer” and forgot he had the knife on him.

Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss sentenced Devlin to a 67-day restriction of liberty order. Devlin is banned from leaving his home in the city’s Liberton area between 9pm and 7am during that period.
