Scot who almost died from pneumonia in Vietnam thanks people for their support

A personal trainer who became seriously ill on holiday in Vietnam has spoken out for the first time – four months after she was fighting for her life.

Mekala Osborne, 22, was travelling in Asia in September last year when she began suffering from a sore throat, which she tried to beat with Strepsils.

The virus, picked up in a forest, caused pneumonia that deteriorated so badly that her family were told she had a five per cent chance of survival.

Mekala was put in an induced coma and moved to a hospital in Singapore while donors raised £12,000 so her family could fly out to be with her.

She was flown back to the UK in November.

Speaking from her bed at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Mekala, from Wallyford, East Lothian, thanked family, friends and well wishers for their support.

She said: “Hi everyone, I just want to say a massive ‘thank you’ for all your support for me and my family – it’s really appreciated.

“I’ll be out singing and dancing soon enough –thank you.”
