Scot warned he could be caged for FOURTH disqualified driving conviction

A banned driver has been warned he could be j ailed after he was caught driving while disqualified for the FOURTH time.

Matthew O'Neill was found to be driving while banned from the roads in Ayrshire earlier this year.

He was also driving while uninsured.

The 36-year-old was warned he could be jailed over the crimes when he admitted his guilt in the dock at Ayr Sheriff Court yesterday.

He pleaded guilty to two charges under the Road Traffic Act 1988 during a pre-trial hearing.

His not guilty plea was accepted to a charge of using a mobile phone while driving.

Defence solicitor Ian Gillies told Sheriff Siobhan Connelly that O'Neill, whose address was given on court papers as Airdrie, had been placed on a Community Payback Order at Airdrie Sheriff Court earlier this year.

The lawyer said O'Neill, now of Coatbridge, recognised he had placed his freedom "in jeopardy", but added: "A [background] report might allow the court to deal with this in another way."

Sheriff Connelly said: "With some hesitation I'm going to defer sentence for a report and continue your bail meantime.

"Your last three convictions have been for driving while disqualified and this is a fourth time.

"You have to be prepared for all possible outcomes, here."

O'Neill will be sentenced next month.
