Scot killed and pal injured after masked gunmen open fire in St Lucia bar

A Scots former hotel boss has been killed and his friend injured after masked gunmen opened fire at a bar in St Lucia in the Caribbean.

Donnie McKinnon and his Peter Jackson, from Lancashire, were enjoying a drink on the balcony of Steve's Bar in the town when they were shot at on Saturday afternoon, according to reports.

Donnie was pronounced dead at the scene, while Peter was rushed to hospital.

McKinnon is believed to have moved to St Lucia 13 years ago and managed a 2,000 acre former working plantation on the island called Soufriere Estate.

The Scot was the general manager at the well-known Marcliffe Hotel and Spa in Aberdeen between 2007 and 2009. It's understood freelance photographer Jackson, 72, has lived in St Lucia for more than three decades and is the former director of the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation.

The St Lucia Times reports that a local resident said: "Everyone knew them. They were community people. This is sad."

A police spokesman said: "We are looking into this shooting. We are speaking to people who were been present and may have seen something. We will leave no stone unturned as we investigate this fully."

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are urgently seeking more information from the government in St Lucia about an incident which took place yesterday.”
