Scot jailed for terror offences cost taxpayers almost £15,000 in legal aid

A sick terrorist who idolised mass killers cost taxpayers almost £15,000 in legal aid.

Sam Imrie, 24, was last week jailed for more than seven years after being found guilty of of terrorism, fire-raising and possessing child and extreme pornography.

It has emerged he was given £14,648 in legal aid to fund a defence team led by Jim Keegan QC.

The final figure could rise because firms have four months after the conclusion of proceedings to claim funds.

Imrie, from Glenrothes, threatened to set fire to the Fife Islamic Centre in the town.

He glorified murderers online including terrorist Anders Brevik, who slaughtered 77 people in Norway in 2011.

He was also said to have been fascinated with Brenton Tarrant, who killed Muslims praying at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand in March 2019.

Officers also seized a terrifying arsenal of weapons at his home consisting of knives, a hammer, nunchucks, an axe and a rifle scope.

Jurors heard how Imrie was a loner and had developed post-traumatic stress disorder after being assaulted when he was younger.

Jailing him, judge Lord Mulholland said: “I hope you take advantage of your time in custody to remove the hatred from your heart.”
