Scot crushed by digger saved by quick-thinking onlookers as 'Glasgow spirit' hailed

The 'Glasgow spirit' has been praised after a crowd of random locals rushed to help a man crushed by a digger on a city street.

It's understood a kerbstone was being lifted on Renfield Street as part of ongoing roadworks at around 2.40pm yesterday.

But the massive machine used in the removal tipped and crushed the worker beneath it.

The 42-year-old man was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary by ambulance. His condition is not known at this time.

Stephen Huggon watched the drama unfold from the top deck of a passing bus.

The 39-year-old and his pal immediately rushed to the man's aid and phoned an ambulance.

Stephen told the Record: "I was just on the bus and was passing the part where they are digging up the road to put down cycle paths.

"There was a huge kerbstone on the digger and then it just fell on the guy.

"It must have been about three and a half tonnes of weight landing on him. It was just horrific.

"We jumped out of the bus straight away to go help.

"It was amazing to see so many people who stopped. Folk were getting out of their vans and there must have been about 15 to 20 of us in total.

"We moved the digger off him and the ambulance was called.

"It was a big incident with a load of ambulances and the paramedics were fantastic with him.

"I don't know the state of his injuries but he wasn't in a good way.

"The ambulance took him off to hospital and I was there to the end to see him off."

Stephen said the digger had been lifted within 90 seconds of tipping on the man.

He added: "What was amazing was that these were just random members of the public who dropped everything to help the guy.

"It really is the Glasgow spirit and I was really happy to see people looking out for each other.

Police confirmed that they were called to the incident and that the Health and Safety Executive had been notified.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.40pm on Friday, 12 March, 2021, officers were called to a report of a worker injured on Renfield Street in Glasgow.

“Emergency services attended and the 42 year-old man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.”

The Health and Safety Executive and Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
