Scot caught with disguised stun guns and drugs dies in prison

A 41-year-old Scots prisoner who was caught with stun guns and illegal drugs has died in prison.

Christopher Nicol, a prisoner at HMP Castle Huntly, a few miles west of Dundee, died on Friday last week.

The death is not being treated a suspicious.

The Scottish Prison Service said the death has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A fatal accident inquiry will be held in due course.

Nicol, a joiner, was jailed for more than three years at Dundee Sheriff Court in 2020 after admitting buying the stun guns from online shop Wish.

Police also found nearly 2,000 diazepam tablets and cannabis after searching his home and car in Kirriemuir, Angus.

The court heard that two disguised stun guns were also recovered as part of the search and he admitted buying them from Wish, claiming he thought they were capable of creating an electric spark and a torch.

But he did not offer any explanation as to why he bought them.

Nicol’s defence lawyer said his client believed he was acting legally and that the items were locked in a secure garage and that there was no suggestion they were used or intended to be used.

Nicol had also claimed the drugs in his possession were for his personal use.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police Scotland was made aware of the sudden death of a 41-year-old man that happened at HMP Castle Huntly on Friday, 26 November, 2021.

“Enquiries were carried out at the prison, there were no suspicious circumstances and a report was sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
