Scot captures epic mind-bending photo of Dumfries and Galloway reservoir

A Scot's mind-bending photograph of a reservoir near Stranraer has gone viral after he shared it on social media.

Amateur snapper Callum McDowall was visiting the Penwhiren reservoir when he noticed that the water level was higher than he'd ever seen it meaning the overflow sinks were covered creating a strange optical effect.

The 48-year-old grew up in nearby Newluce and wanted to see how the recent heavy rainfalls had affected the reservoir.

Heading there with his camera set up, he was surprised to see the sinks in full flow.

"You could feel the water rumbling below your feet," Callum explained. "It takes a lot of rainfall to get to this level, I'd been up on a few occasions previously but the water was nowhere near this level."

The head chef, who is now based in Bo'ness, stated that he used the tips he'd learned from Dooj Brawls photography and Mark Shannon photography to help get the best shot.

He said: "I captured the shot by extending the tripod high on the bridge over the overflow and ensuring it still had enough stability so that I could shoot long exposure. The photo was shot on a Canon eos1100d, Canon efs18-55 lens, Ranger filters. This is a very basic setup and proves you can capture amazing shots on a low budget."

Callum, who is head chef for at the Boardwalk in Falkirk, was blown away by the response to his pic, he said: "I'm very surprised and taken aback, I'd never expected it would go crazy in the way that it has.

"The response has been amazing and all good, the amount of feedback has been incredible."
