Scot caged after illegal cigarettes gang flooded England with tax free fags

A Scot who was part of a gang that flooded England with illegal cigarettes has been jailed for two years and three months.

Dani Adam, of Dundee, and eight other men got a total of 16 years for the £667,000 scam.

The 29-year-old, who is also known as Komar Ali Mohammed, was found guilty of tax duty fraud.

Gang leader Harem Kamishi, 33, was jailed for four years and three months.

The gang were caught after a lengthy operation by Kent Trading Standards, who seized 481kg of tobacco and 2.9million cigarettes between 2009 and 2017.

The fags were found in shops, vehicles, lock up garages and houses. They were even hidden in under-the-counter compartments.

Kim Holden, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The network used increasingly elaborate methods to hide the smuggled cigarettes and tobacco.”

Some of the illicit stash was hidden in shops in under-the-counter compartments that could only be opened with car key-style fobs.

HMRC fraud spokesman Ben Moore said: “These men have undermined legitimate, hard-working shop owners who serve their communities and pay their taxes.

"They undercut their competitors, and have unashamedly contributed to the £1.8 billion annual tax gap caused by the illegal trade in cigarettes and tobacco.

“Tax fraud steals money from our public services that we all rely on, day in day out."
