Scot accused of tying up and murdering Asda worker wife with mallet unfit to stand trial

A man accused of murdering his wife is unfit to stand trial, it has emerged.

Peter Maher was charged with killing Jeanna Maher , 51, at her home in Drumchapel, Glasgow last September 26.

Forensic teams cordoned off the property on Dewar Drive shortly after officers discovered her body inside.

Prosecutors claimed Mrs Maher – an Asda supermarket worker - had her wrists and ankles bound with ligatures before being repeatedly struck with a mallet or similar item.

Maher, 58, was today back in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow .

Judge Lord Mulholland was told it had been ruled he “was not fit for trial”.

An examination of facts hearing – which would have looked at the circumstances of the case – had previously been set but then postponed.

Advocate Depute Steven Borthwick said two doctors had compiled reports on Maher.

He then asked for a treatment order to be made against Maher.

Lord Mulholland agreed to the request. Maher will remain in the State Hospital at Carstairs .

As a result, the allegations against Maher have been shelved meantime, but the Crown reserve the right to prosecute in future.

Friends and family paid tribute to Jeanna over social media shortly after news of Jeanna's death in September last year.

Rosie Melrose wrote on Facebook: “So sad I had the pleasure of knowing this lovely happy woman such a happy person rip xx"
Anne Cameron said Jeanna always had a smile on her face.

She added: "OMG such sad news brought up with Jeanna during my school years then saw her most days on my way home from work in Asda Bearsden always had a smile on her face and always said hello x RIP lovely ladies x thoughts are with all the family friend's and colleagues xxx"

Brenda Tedford knew Jeanna Maher and wrote: "So sad I had the pleasure of knowing Jeanna from going to the Goodyear on weekends such a lovely person RIP Jeanna gone but never will be forgotten."
