Electric quick Lance Morris has struck early to help Perth Scorchers restrict Hobart Hurricanes to 9-146 in their Big Bash League game at Optus Stadium.

Test prospect Morris snared 2-21, dismissing danger men Caleb Jewell and Matthew Wade cheaply in his opening spell after the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.

Jewell (8) was coming off three 50s from his past five innings but fell victim to a short ball which he pulled to Jason Behrendorff at fine leg.

Hurricanes skipper Wade departed for a third-ball duck, caught brilliantly by diving wicketkeeper Josh Inglis after miscuing an attempted ramp shot.

Perth is the best-performed fielding side this season with a catching success rate of almost 90 per cent, according to broadcaster Fox Cricket, and the Scorchers again held onto almost all of their chances.

Nick Hobson almost pulled off a one-handed screamer at square leg to dismiss Zak Crawley but could only get his fingertips to the ball.

Crawley (19) built a promising 31-run stand with Tim David before being caught on the boundary by Matt Kelly off Ashton Agar's bowling.

David (20) departed the following ball, holing out after attempting to send a slower Behrendorff delivery into the crowd.

Reduced to 5-66 halfway through their innings, the Hurricanes looked to rebuild through D'Arcy Short but he was caught and bowled by Kelly on 18.

The visitors saved their power surge for late in the innings and tailenders Tom Andrews (27) and Nathan Ellis (24) delivered some lusty blows to improve their total.

Both were run out while trying to sneak singles in the final over.

Perth reaped the benefits of a four-man pace attack after recalling Morris and Kelly to join Behrendorff, Andrew Tye (2-30) and offspinner Agar.

A win on Wednesday night will return the second-placed Scorchers to the top of the ladder ahead of the Sydney Sixers.

Hobart are fifth on the ladder but still have four games left to secure a finals berth.
