Scope to employ only 8-10,000 more in government jobs: Goa CM Pramod Sawant

PANAJI/BICHOLIM: CM Pramod Sawant on Sunday said that already there are 70,000 government employees in the state and there is scope to employ only another 10,000 at the most, as the existing employees retire.

Youth in the state should therefore look at tapping other sectors like hospitality for work. Not everyone can bag a government job, he said.

“It is not possible for everyone to get a government job. At present, we have 70,000 state government employees. How many more can we employ? We can employ another 8,000 to 10,000 as existing employees are retiring.” “This doesn’t mean that someone who wants to work will not get a job. Everyone should get a job. If you want a job, we need to see what qualifications that person has, what job that person wants to do and how we can upgrade that person’s skills,” the CM said after inaugurating a seminar on vocational guidance in hospitality services at Ravindra Bhavan, Sanquelim.

He said that at present 80% of the workers in the hospitality sector in Goa are outsiders and Goan youth need to tap these opportunities too.

“During the Covid lockdown as the exodus of migrants from the state began, we realised that 80% of the employees in the hospitality sector in Goa are outsiders. We have people from Himachal Pradesh, UP, Bihar. People are coming here to work from different states across India and we often say there is no work here,” the CM said.

In Goa, hospitality sector will only keep growing and will provide the second most opportunities of employment after mining, he said.

“I feel we need to create awareness about these opportunities amongst our youth. Rural youth are not looking at hospitality sector much. If a youth from Himachal Pradesh or Bihar can work here on front desk or in other capacities in the hospitality sector here in Goa, why not a local youth?” Sawant said.
