Police have arrested a man over an alleged hit-run incident which left a scooter rider in hospital. (AAP)

A man is in custody over an alleged hit-run incident that left a scooter rider with critical injuries in Melbourne's north.

Victoria Police say a 45-year-old man was hit by a vehicle while riding a scooter in Campbellfield at 1pm on Sunday, and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police were alerted to a man loitering near a vehicle in the adjacent suburb of Coolaroo at about 4.20pm, with officers then trying to intercept the man in Fawkner.

The police airwing and critical incident response team members tracked the man to a car park in Brunswick where he was arrested.

He remains in custody and is assisting police with their enquiries.
