Scone row online as people wonder whether you can eat them during lent

Lent is a time for abstinence in the run-up to Easter with many people giving up everything from drinking and chocolate to cigarettes and snacking.

One mum is doing her part by giving up cakes - although she may now have found a hack thanks to an online row.

Melanie took to Facebook to explain her dilemma - asking whether or not she can eat scones, reports The Mirror.

She posted in Facebook group Family Lockdown Tips & Ideas saying her son wanted her to bake scones.

She was uncertain if the food would break the rules and wrote: "Help me settle a debate... are scones a type of cake or bread? I think it's a type of bread...

"This is why I've asked, my son wants me to make some but I've given up cake for lent."

Scones have long caused debate across the UK - whether the question is how you should pronounce it (it's scone), or whether you should put the cream or the jam on first.

Arguing it was a cake, one person wrote: "I'd say cake, based on the fact that the raising agent is not yeast."

While another added: "I would say a cake as it's usually sweet."

A third chimed in: "In the dictionary it says it's a cake. Google says it's a bread. I would believe dictionary because it's been around longer than Google."

While one in favour of bread said: "I'd say bread, mostly because it's sold with all bread products in shops."

Another added: "Technically scone is a bread, as it is has a leavening agent it, it's also known as quick bread."

One told her: "I make scones all the time never thought of them as being bread or cakes for that matter. Just always thought of them as scones. And no to cream. Just butter and jam."
