Scone councillor condemns public drinking disruption in local park

A large group of rowdy teenagers besieged the skate and playpark in Scone at the weekend - leaving a trail of smashed glass and keeping locals awake until the wee hours.

Local councillor Lewis Simpson has dubbed the behaviour as “disgraceful” and “unacceptable”.

One person living close to the skate park and play area described putting up with the nuisance group’s antisocial behaviour last Saturday night as “an absolute nightmare.”

Cllr Simpson told the PA: “I was made aware of this by members of the public as well as concerned parents at the school gates.

“This disgraceful behaviour, especially the smashing of glass bottles in a children’s play area, is quite unacceptable and not usual for Scone.

“Fortunately I have been made aware of the alleged ringleaders’ name and this has been passed on.

“I have been assured that the council’s safer communities team will be undertaking extra patrols and that the police are aware of the situation.

“I will make a point of regularly taking a look in both the park and the school grounds myself and would appeal to anyone with any information to inform the police on 101 or the safer communities team SCT@pkc.gov.uk or let me know, lddsimpson@pkc.gov.uk

“I am confident that those responsible will be identified and this temporary problem will be addressed.”

Cllr Simpson added: “I should also wish to thank the group of concerned parents and the council street sweeping crew who swiftly cleared up the mess last Sunday morning.”

Scone Community Council pointed the finger at local youths and also others from Bridgend.

“We have had numerous reports of a large group of teenagers in Scone Park making a bit of a nuisance of themselves,” the community council posted.

“Not all of those in the group were from Scone and there is a strong indication that some were from Bridgend. Alcohol may have also been involved.

“Apparently they were loud, abusive and intimidating to some.

“This morning (Sunday 16) the skate park and its surroundings have broken glass all around.

“Police were rightly informed and it is important that the police are called on every occasion for them to deal with it. It would seem that this is becoming a regular occurrence.

“As your community council, we will take this further with PKC, your local elected councillors and the police.

“However, we are only one voice and it is important that anyone with any information or concerns regarding these happenings also report them.”

One local who lives nearby noted: “I didn’t get to my bed till near 5.30am because of the shouting and swearing.

“I live in Sandy Road right over the road from where they all were. At one point two got picked up and just before the last young lad got in the car, he took a drink from the bottle of Buckfast then decided to smash the bottle on the road.

“Saturday night was an absolute nightmare.”

Glass littering the skate ramp and grass was photographed by a walker on Sunday morning.

The person commented: “I’m distressed that there is no thought for the risk of serious injury or indeed life threatening injuries to children who play in the park.

“I would assume that the people that were responsible understand the consequences and luckily on this occasion, no children have been seriously injured.”
