Scissor Sisters to curate Mapplethorpe exhibition

Scissor Sisters are to curate an exhibition focusing on the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. It will be based around the seven images by the late artist that the band used on their album, singles and tour this year. Other work by Mapplethorpe, including rarely seen sculptures, will also feature, alongside provocative pieces by artists who admired or were influenced by him, including Matthew Barney, Glenn Ligon, Jack Pierson and Gillian Wearing.

It represents something of a coup for the Alison Jacques gallery in London, from which Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy), the band's guitarist, has bought artworks. "We approached [the band] with the idea of this group show with them as curators, and they said yes straight away," said the gallery's senior director Roger Tatley.

Sometimes famous curating names are just that – names – but Tatley said the band were being "genuinely proactive" in preparations for the show. The show opens on 19 January.
