Scientology 'religious retreat' cruise ship quarantined over outbreak of measles

A Church of Scientology cruise ship which offers 'religious retreats' has been quarantined in the Caribbean after an outbreak of measles, according to reports.

St Lucian authorities told reporters that a female crew member on the boat is suffering from measles.

The vessel, which had almost 300 passengers on-board, has been in quarantine since Monday morning, it is claimed.

St Lucia's chief medical officer Dr Merlene Fredericks-James said: "Measles in a highly contagious disease. Anyone who is not adequately immunized against measles can contract the disease, if there has been close contact with a confirmed case.

"It is therefore likely that other persons on the boat may have been exposed.

"The ship’s doctor has the confirmed case in isolation on the ship. The individual is in stable condition."

NBC News reported that a St Lucian coast guard identified the ship as the 440ft vessel, called Freewinds, on the Church of Scientology's website.

The page states that the boat offers 'advanced spiritual counseling' as part of a 'religious retreat' for scientologists.

It adds: "The Freewinds is a very special place. It is the one place a scientologist may go and be certain he will be able to devote himself entirely to his religious practice and in the company of people who share his religious commitment and outlook on life in general."

Media reports state that the boat is scheduled to leave the Caribbean island at just before midnight tonight, with the St Lucian authorities claiming that they have no power to stop it from departing.
