Scientists unlock the secret of staving off dementia - and it's all in your diet

People most at risk of dementia can slash their chances of developing it by eating well, boozing less, exercising and not smoking.

Research suggests risks are 32% lower among those predisposed to the condition if they follow a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Elzbieta Kuzma, of the University of Exeter, said: “Our findings are exciting as they show we can take action to try to offset our genetic risk for dementia.”

The study analysed data from 196,383 adults aged 60 and older, and identified 1,769 cases of dementia over eight years.

Participants were grouped according to their genetic risk, as well as diet, physical activity, alcohol intake and smoking.

Dr Fiona Carragher, of the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “With one person developing dementia every three minutes in the UK Knowing how to lower our dementia risk couldn’t be more vital.

“Hit that salad bar, swap a cocktail for a mocktail and get your exercise kit on.”
