- Archaeologists have identified a victim of the 79AD Mount Vesuvius eruption in Pompeii as potentially being a doctor, based on a "medical kit" found with his remains.
- The kit was discovered among the remains of 13 people who sought shelter in a vineyard, known as the "Garden of the Fugitives", during the volcanic eruption.
- The contents of the case included a small drawer, a fabric bag with bronze and silver coins, and various instruments compatible with a medical set, including small metal surgical tools.
- A slate slab, typically used in ancient times for preparing medical or cosmetic substances, was also found, further supporting the theory that the individual was a medicus (doctor).
- Pompeii archaeologist Gabriel Zuchtriegel suggested the man carried his tools with him to rebuild his life elsewhere or to help others, highlighting the dedication of the profession.
