Scientist Rebellion activists at Cop26 plan to get arrested in Glasgow

Climate change activists have announced plans to deliberately get arrested during Glasgow's Cop26 summit that will kick off this afternoon.

Extinction Rebellion scientists will head to the city this week to "engage in disruptive action" in a bid to attract attention from cops and get arrested.

With traffic chaos already expected during the climate summit, some fear activists will pull similar stunts seen in England in recent weeks as Insulate Britain activists blocked off motorways.

Scientist Rebellion - a group within Extinction Rebellion - praised the Insulate Britain protests and deemed them successful as they announced plans to get nicked.

Spokesperson for the group, Charlie Gardener, told the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland: “We’ll be heading to Glasgow this week to engage in a disruptive action in which we intend to be arrested.

“The reason we’re doing this is because as scientists we have tried every available channel to get our message heard, and we’ve not been able to do that.

“Even today, most people do not fully understand the extent of the danger we’re in.

“Having failed for 40 years, we’re now forced to use other means and getting arrested is one of the ways that we can get into the news and communicate the urgency that our knowledge compels us to act with.

He added: “I think recent protests by Insulate Britain have been successful. This country is simply not ready for climate change.”
