Science Weekly podcast: what are science museums for?

The Science Museum in London is a treasure house of wonderful technological artifacts such as Stephenson's Rocket and Apollo 10. But are its glory days numbered in the new era of quantum mechanics, genomics and particle physics? What exhibit could possibly do justice to these abstruse fields of science?

This week's podcast is a repeat of a special show first published in 2012. Guardian science correspondent Ian Sample meets Ian Blatchford, director of the Science Museum in London, to discuss the role of science museums in promoting the public understanding and appreciation of scientific innovations – both old and new. The museum isn't just for inspiring kids, insists Blatchford. He wants adults to join the conversation about science too.

We join them for an exclusive tour of some of the museum's star attractions.
