Science Weekly podcast: James Gleick spreads The Information

This week on Science Weekly we meet the 2012 winner of the Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books, James Gleick, who took the prize for The Information – an epic historical tour of humans' relationship with information.

Gleick is the author of the hugely successful Chaos as well as biographies of Richard Feynman and Isaac Newton. The Information reviews the history of humanity through the lens of our attempts to make communication faster, more efficient and more available. His ambitious story spans savannahs, hunter-gatherers, ancient civilisations, alphabets, the dawn of science, codes, data, electronics and quantum physics.

Science Weekly presenter Alok Jha is joined by Guardian science correspondent Ian Sample and Observer science editor Robin McKie to discuss the discovery of microbial life under the ice cap of Lake Vida in Antarctica and the joint US/European project Orion that offers the possibility of the first Briton setting foot on the moon.
