Science Weekly podcast: Daniel Dennett's tools for thinking

On this week's show Alok Jha meets Daniel Dennett, a philosopher who writes about the philosophy of science and the workings of the human mind. Daniel discusses his new book Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking, a "greatest hits" of useful philosophical tactics that he claims can help you win friends and influence people.

Alok is also joined by science writer Vivienne Parry to preview this year's Cheltenham Science Festival, which kicks off on Tuesday.

Observer science editor Robin McKie is on hand to help review last week's big science news stories including the discovery of the world's oldest known fossil in the bird lineage – which pre-dated Archaeopteryx by 10m years – and fears over the emergence of drug resistance in a deadly new bird flu virus, H7N9.
