Schumer drops $6.2 million to improve majority leader chances

WASHINGTON _ New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer is dropping $6.2 million toward Democratic Senate races in hopes of becoming the Senate majority leader.

Schumer used the money from his personal campaign fund to give $3 million to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The other $3.2 million will go to Democrats in close races. Which specific races will be revealed in the third quarter Federal Election Commission report.

The move shows that the three-term senator is comfortable in his own re-election contest, having reported $27.5 million in cash on hand as of June 30.

Comparatively, his Republican opponent Wendy Long had only $31,915 in the bank at the end of that same reporting period.

The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call rates the race as Safe Democrat.
