Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" Monday President Trump's historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was "reality show foreign policy."

This was one of the worst few days in American foreign policy and American diplomatic history in a long time."

The big picture: Trump on Sunday became the first sitting U.S. president to step inside North Korea. He and Kim agreed afterward the U.S. would restart stalled nuclear talks.

  • The encounter reflects Trump's instinct for stagecraft and spontaneous diplomacy. But Schumer dismissed the president's action as a "photo op." He told CNN host Anderson Cooper Trump was getting nothing in return and that "praising dictators" would hurt the U.S. in the long run.
