Schools won't be closing early for Christmas in England, Government confirms

Schools in England won't be breaking up early for Christmas, the Government has confirmed.

And Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said that keeping schools and colleges open is a "national priority."

This comes after Wales Online reported that some Welsh councils have confirmed they are considering closing schools early so pupils can isolate before spending Christmas with family.

Options being looked at reportedly vary from closing one week early on December 11 to shutting two or three days early.

Welsh Unions the UCAC, the NEU Cymru, NASUWT Cymru and the Association of School and College Leaders Cymru have all called on schools to return to remote teaching for the last weeks of term to avoid coronavirus infections and self isolating over Christmas.

But at Friday's Welsh Government coronavirus briefing First Minister Mark Drakeford said it was not the intention of the Welsh Government that schools should close early.

In a statement on its website the Department for Education has echoed this, saying there is no plans to close schools early for Christmas.

It said: "There remain no plans for schools to close early for Christmas, to extend the holidays or to implement rota systems."

Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils have also said there are no plans to close schools early in their areas.
