Schools to say closed until at least mid-February Nicola Sturgeon confirms

Home learning will continue for thousands of children for weeks to come.

Nicola Sturgeon has just announced the news in a statement to the Scottish Parliament after confirming that level four lockdown will stay in place over the same period

But the First Minister said covid infection levels are still not low enough to let youngsters return to classrooms yet.

She said: "We will review it again on February 2 and I hope we can set out then a firmer timetable for getting children back to school.

"I can say this today, if it is at all possible - and I very much hope it will be - to begin even a phased return to school learning in mid-February we will do that."

But Ms Sturgeon cautioned that children will be allowed to return to the classroom when the time is right, adding: "I am going to be straight with families and say that it is simply too early to be sure to whether and to what extent this will be possible.

"However, I will update parliament again as soon as we have completed the review taking advice from our clinical advisers."

The news comes as a further 71 new coronavirus deaths were confirmed in Scotland, bringing the death toll to 5,376.

A further 1,165 new cases were recorded overnight, 354 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and 178 in Lanarkshire.
