Schools to 're-open primary school and key exam years first' under new plans

Schools could reportedly re-open to primary school children and key exam years first under plans being considered.

The proposals are said to be under consideration as part of a return of millions of children back into classrooms.

The Government is said to be looking at 'all options' to reopen schools and a source is reported to have said schools will be 'the first' thing to reopen when lockdown is eased, The Sun reports.

The paper went on to say that the final decision lay with scientists and depended on the Covid infection rate as well as hospitalisations and deaths.

An option reportedly being explored is to reopen schools for primary school children first as it is harder for them to work from home using Zoom.

The Department for Education is also said to be considering partially reopening secondary schools so that children in Year 10 and Year 12 - who have exams to sit - go back first.

Meanwhile, a survey of parents for Mumsnet website found 75 per cent said lockdowns are harming their children's education and wellbeing.

Children's Commissioner for England Anne Longfield said: "Children are more withdrawn, they are suffering in terms of isolation, confidence levels are falling, and some have serious issues.

"Families will need hope and clarity about what comes next, and that of course is what the speculation we're hearing really feeds into, that -confusion."

Ofsted chief inspector Amanda Spielman added: "Pupils' -motivation and engagement remains an issue."

Dr Bernadka Dubicka, of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: "There's been a whole host of children lost to this pandemic, perhaps being abused in the home or living in traumatic circumstances that have lost contact with teachers and sources of support."

The Prime Minister's spokesman yesterday confirmed that a review of current lockdown measures in England will take place on February 15.
