Schools to close for Queen's funeral

Schools will be closed on Monday as “a mark of respect” on the day of the Queen’s funeral.

Both Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire councils have confirmed schools, nurseries and family centres will shut on September 19, which is a bank holiday.

It comes after the UK’s longest serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on Thursday.

Her funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday, with her coffin set to be moved from St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh to London later today.

Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron earlier paid tribute to the Queen on behalf of all residents of the area and attended the Proclamation of the King outside Renfrewshire House on Sunday, along with the provosts of Renfrewshire and Inverclyde.

She said: ““We are deeply saddened at the news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. On behalf of the people of Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire Council, I wish to express our sincerest condolences to the entire Royal Family.

“As a mark of respect, flags will be flown at half-mast and in the coming days, we will share further details of opportunities to commemorate the Queen.”

In a statement, East Renfrewshire Council said: “Following confirmation that the day of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, September 19 is to be a bank holiday, all the council’s schools, nurseries and family centres will be closed as a mark of respect.

“Our office buildings will also be shut, although some essential services will still run.”

Books of condolence are still available for the public to sign at Renfrewshire House in Paisley, Johnstone Town Hall, Renfrew Town Hall and Tweedie Hall in Linwood, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

In East Renfrewshire books of condolence have also been opened at the council’s Eastwood and Barrhead offices. Members of the public who wish to sign the books can do so between 9am and 5pm, from Monday to Saturday, at either office.
