Schools Strike protest planed in Bristol - all you need to know

Hundreds of youngsters are to walk out of their classrooms this week to press for Government action on climate change.

Students across the city will be taking part in Valentine’s Day strike as part of nationwide action by the UK Student Climate Network (UKSCN).

This will be the ninth time youngsters supporting Bristol Youth Strike4Climate will leave their lessons behind.

The event is part of a global movement inspired by the actions of 16-year-old campaigner Greta Thunberg in Sweden.

This year’s action will have the theme of Love Letters to the Planet.

It will see strikers writing down the things they love about the planet alongside suggestions to the council for climate change in Bristol.

The letters will be used for ideas in the group’s ongoing discussions with the council.

Speakers at the strike include Ian Barrett, the CEO of Avon Wildlife Trust which organisation declared an ecological emergency in Bristol earlier this month.

The demonstration will be held at College Green from 11am.

The UKSCN wants to see the Government declare a climate emergency and implement a new deal to achieve climate change.

It also wants educational systems reformed to teach young people about the urgency, severity and scientific basis of the climate crisis and the Government to communicate the severity of the crisis and the necessity to act now to the general public.

Campaigners also want to empower the future by recognising the importance of young people by bringing the voting age down to 16.

Previous strikes across the city have caused traffic disruption.

The event on Friday marks a year since the group’s first climate action strike.
