Schools showcase dance talent

The annual West Lothian school dance competition featured 164 dancers from all the area’s high schools.

The event at Howden Park Centre in Livingston was run by pupils from St Margaret’s Academy and attracted a sell-out crowd of over 200.

West Calder pupil Ellie Fergusson, winner of ‘The Greatest Dancer’, put on a special performance to open the show.

The team from West Calder High School won the senior category for S4 to S6 ahead of runners-up Inveralmond Community High School from Livingston.

Linlithgow Academy’s performance earned them the team prize in the junior category, closely followed by St Kentigern’s Academy in Blackburn.

Executive councillor for education David Dodds said: “We have a huge amount of dance talent in our schools and it’s great to see it showcased in this way.”

Teams were allowed up to 15 pupils and their choreography was to last up to three minutes.

Pupils were encouraged to make up their own choreography but were allowed to use choreography that they already knew.

The three judges were Caroline Millar, Kirsty Clarke and Lucy Kirkwood, all dance and PE teachers from other councils.

Performances were judged on timing and use of music, variety of movements and overall execution.
