Schools in Tokyo to remain closed until May 6

In response to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, the Tokyo metropolitan government has decided to extend the suspension of about 250 schools, including metropolitan high schools and combined junior high and high schools, until May 6, the last day of the Golden Week holiday period.

Municipal elementary and junior high schools and private schools in the capital will also be asked to cooperate and take similar measures.

Public schools run by the metropolitan government will be allowed to hold entrance and opening ceremonies during the closure period on the premise that the scale of the ceremonies will be reduced and measures to prevent infection will be thoroughly implemented.

Students will be asked to study at home during the school closures. Online study materials will be provided

using information and communications technology (ICT).

Public schools in Tokyo have been temporarily closed since early March at the request of the central government. Currently, the schools are in the spring vacation period.

The metropolitan government's board of education initially planned to reopen schools in early April by allowing the change of school hours.

However, the board of education has been reconsidering the timing of the restart due to the sharp increase in the number of people who tested positive for the virus in Tokyo since late March.

The metropolitan government will maintain the closures of Tokyo zoos, museums and other facilities until May 6, including Ueno Zoo in Taito Ward, which was originally temporarily closed until April 12.
