Preparations are underway at elementary and junior high schools throughout Tokyo as they are set to reopen on Monday after months-long closures due to the coronavirus.
To help prevent students from gathering in crowded spaces, Katushika Elementary School in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, is taping to the floor in front of handwashing areas sheets with drawings of footprints.
Students will stand on the footprints as they wait, with each sheet spaced for better social distancing. The children will be allowed to use only some of the taps as well.
There will be sanitizers available in every classroom and teachers will be expected to disinfect doors and the surfaces of desks.
The school has also prepared a second nurse's office exclusively for students who suddenly develop a fever so that they can be placed away from other children.
"Finally, school is starting and I am looking forward to seeing the children's faces," the principal said. "However, we also have many worries about measures against infection. We will take precautions as the school reopens."
