Schools' Cup captains finally get their hands on trophy after cancelled final

A special presentation has been made to the captains of Royal School Armagh and Wallace High School.

They were recently presented with the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup trophy at Kingspan Stadium.

The two sides were due to meet in the traditional St Patrick's Day final back in March, but the onset of Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the eagerly anticipated clash.

It resulted in the schools sharing the prestigious trophy in 2020.

Sam Rainey (RS Armagh) and Reuben Crothers (Wallace HS) were individually presented with the trophy by Gary Leslie, President of Ulster Rugby, in the company of Richard Caldwell on behalf of competition sponsors, Danske Bank.

Mr Leslie commented: “Due to the interruption caused by Covid-19, unfortunately we didn't get to play the Danske Bank Ulster Schools' Cup Final this year, and the decision was taken that The Royal School Armagh and Wallace High School would be confirmed as shared winners.

"So it is nice that we can now formally recognise that and conduct a trophy presentation here at Kingspan Stadium.

“Both teams enjoyed fantastic campaigns and are a credit to their school.

"For some of these young players, they will go on to bigger and better things on the rugby pitches, while for others this will be the pinnacle of their rugby career.

"For all of them, it will certainly be a time in their lives that they will never forget, and I hope they all have great memories of their schools rugby career.”

Mr Caldwell, Managing Director of Strategy and Commercial Development at Danske Bank added: “There’s no denying this is a season, and a year, that will go down in history.

"It’s not been the usual end to the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup that we’re accustomed to – the final game of the tournament is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated sporting events in the local calendar, and it was sorely missed this year.

“We’re proud sponsors of this historic competition, and I’m delighted to be able to acknowledge the hard work, determination and sporting achievement by presenting both the Royal School Armagh and Wallace High School teams with winning trophies for the 2019/20 Danske Bank Schools’ Cup.

"I’ve no doubt that the skills and talent we’ve witnessed from the season will see these players through the next stages in their sporting careers, and we wish them all the very best for the future.”
