Schools, colleges in Tamil Nadu southern districts honour Covid warriors

MADURAI: Schools and colleges in the southern districts celebrated Independence Day with enthusiasm by hoisting the national flag, following Covid-19 safety norms. Some schools also honoured Covid-19 warriors during the celebrations.

In most institutions in Madurai, flag hoisting was done in a simple manner with only the staff attending. At Y Othakadai Government Primary School, Covid-19 warriors were honoured. Y Othakadai panchayat president Murugeshwari Saravanan headed the function and hoisted the national flag. Covid-19 frontline workers, including village health nurse Kalaivani, police sub-inspector Damodharan, electrician Prabhu, sanitation worker Karuppasamy, and activist Rajapandi were honoured.

At Chairman Manickavasagam Middle School, Devakottai, Mary, a nurse at the primary health centre, was given a special prize. Dr K Vivek, doctor at Government Rajaji Hospital, was the chief guest. He hoisted the national flag.

At Madurai Kamaraj University, university registrar (in charge) Dr VS Vasantha hoisted the national flag. Tributes were also paid to the Kamaraj statue at the university. University staff took part in the event.

At Lady Doak College, the principal and secretary, Dr Christianna Singh, welcomed the gathering and chief guest Dr Suka Joshua, associate professor of PG and Research Centre of English hoisted the flag. At Kendriya Vidyalaya 2, Thirupparankundram, school principal A Jerald was the chief guest. The principal distributed shields and certificates to toppers of class X and class XII.
