Schools across Falkirk close as thousands spend night in freezing conditions after gas main fails

A number of schools in central Scotland have been closed as workers continue their efforts to repair a gas mains failure.

Falkirk Council have taken steps to close St Mungo’s and Larbert high schools, while nine primary schools and three other learning facilities have also been shut for Monday.

The council say that the precautionary closures are in relation to the ongoing issues with gas supply in the area.

A spokesperson for Falkirk Council said: “ School staff should report to school in the firs instance when it can be decided to either stay in school with electric heaters, deploy to other schools where we have staffing issues or send home to work at home.

"A decision regarding opening in Tuesday will be taken tomorrow and this page. In addition, a group text to the parents and staff affected will also be sent.”

Staff at SGN have been working to restore gas to around 8,000 properties in central Scotland (PA)

Eight thousands properties were left as temperatures plummeted to below zero over the weekend.

Homes in Carronshore, Larbert, Skinflats, Stenhousemuir have been affected from at least 6.30am on Sunday morning.

Temperatures fell to as low as minus four as gas infrastructure company SGN worked with affected home owners in the area.

Heaters and hotplates have been distributed from Camelon Community Centre in Falkirk (PA)

Engineers are going door to door to turn off supplies in affected properties and had visited 3,000 homes by the end of Sunday night.

In a statement, SGN said: "Thank you for your patience so far. We appreciate it's not easy being without your gas supply in the cold weather and we're doing all we can to get your gas back on as quickly as possible.

"It's likely it will be several more days until everyone's gas supplies are restored.

"In the meantime, we're continuing to work closely with Falkirk Council and Police Scotland, as well as other local organisations, to support the community - prioritising those who are vulnerable to make sure they're well looked after while they're without gas."

The Met Office has anticipated the weather to get more mild, with a low of six predicted on Monday.

SGN said it would provide electric heaters and cookers for the elderly, disabled chronically sick and those with young children - and would be available from Camelon Community Centre.

The company has drafted in extra engineers across Scotland to help deal with the ongoing inssues.
