Schoolgirl told tram worker 'why don't you go back to your own country?'

A tram worker is to get £150 compensation after a schoolgirl sneered: "Why don't you go back to your own country?"

Nottingham Youth Court heard the man was so upset he took eight days off work after the abuse on January 31 last year.

He later told police officers: "This incident left me feeling uncomfortable. I don't go to work for people to make these comments."

The girl is 15 and too young to be named. She admitted racially aggravated threatening behaviour and must spend four months working with probation officers.

District Judge Leo Pyle told her: "If you don't like it, tough. If you come back to court it could revoke the order and ultimately send you to custody.

"Think about your behaviour when using a public service. He doesn't come to work to get racial abuse or to be abused in any other way."

Although the compensation order was made against the girl's mother to be paid at a rate of £10 a fortnight, the judge said he hoped the offender would come up with the cash.

Joanne Reynolds, prosecuting, said two girls were together on a tram and comments were made.

At the end of a journey, the 15-year-old told the NET worker:"Why don't you go back to your own country?"

Michaela Dunk, mitigating, said that the girl had never been in trouble before and had caused no problems since.
