Schoolgirl reaches for the stars with published book

A book written by a Co Armagh schoolgirl has been officially unveiled by three players of the Northern Ireland women's football team.

Nine-year-old Sarah Dickson's story, The Dancing Footballer, was the winning entry of Electric Ireland's Shooting for the Stars writing competition.

The tale about a young girl who danced her way to footballing success impressed the judging panel, led by Derry Girls actor and playwright Tara-Lynne O'Neill.

The book which has now been brought to life by professional illustrator Fruzsina Czech and published in association with Blackstaff Press was unveiled during a storytelling session at Sarah's school Carrick Primary.

The session was hosted by Northern Ireland Women’s captain Marissa Callaghan and players Toni-Leigh Finnegan and Abbie Magee, who each read pages of the book to an audience of pupils.

“It is so exciting to hold the book in my hands!” said Sarah. “My story was read by Marissa and the heroes who inspired it, I can’t believe it.”

A copy of The Dancing Footballer, which deals with themes of inclusivity and equality, will be made available to all primary schools in Northern Ireland via the Education Library Service (EA).
