Schoolgirl left with deep cuts after she was garroted with wire thrown from car window

A schoolgirl was garroted with wire thrown from a car window and was left with horrific cuts along her neck.

Emma Pinteaux, of Sale, was walking home from school along Moss Lane, in Altrincham, when she became entangled in the wire alongside her friends.

Her friends were also injured as they tried to release Emma.

It is believed the wire is used for plumbing and it leaves a white tacky mark behind when touched.

The bobbin of string was thrown out of a car window, thought to be a dark blue or black Range Rover type vehicle.

It did not stop following the incident and police have said they are treating it as a failure to stop collision.

Emma, 15, has been left suffering with painful lacerations across her neck and fears she may be scared for life.

Pieces of the plumbing material were also found entangled in her hair.

Following the incident her friends retrieved the wire from a front garden nearby and found the discarded bobbin on the pavement.

Emma's family are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with further information about the incident to contact police.

It took place at around 3.05pm to 3.10pm on Wednesday, May 8.

Emma's mother, Agnes Pinteaux, said it is unclear whether the driver hurled the wire out of the window by mistake or if it was a prank.

She told the M.E.N: "The children had to free her. She panicked, it was around her neck, she had to take two or three steps backwards as the car was moving in the opposite direction.

"She was very very scared. The kids helped untangle herself. It was quite a long string.

"It was quite a bad cut, it slices into the neck. It has been lacerated, it is similar to a burn. It is deep.

"We don't know what happened. It is mysterious. We don't know how this string got caught on pedestrians."

Agnes, 50, added: "The person was aware as he threw it out of the window.

"I would like people to be aware what they are carrying needs to be tied down securely, or if it was a prank they should be made aware it has gone really badly wrong.

"Emma is doing ok, she is a very resilient girl. She thought she was going to be strangled by it, but she bounces back from everything really quickly."

Agnes also added she wanted to thank Emma's friends for bravely helping to rescue her.

Greater Manchester Police officers reviewed CCTV footage in the area but have not been able to trace the driver.

A GMP spokeswoman confirmed the incident was reported the same day and it is being treated as a failure to stop collision.

Any witnesses or anyone with further information can contact GMP on 101, quoting log number 2210/080519. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
