Schoolgirl learns to bake cakes during lockdown and surprises brother with birthday treat

A creative Hamilton schoolgirl surprised her brother with a handmade 13th birthday cake in a bid to cheer him up.

Carly McAulay was so gutted that she missed out on her P7 Townhill Primary School prom, residential trip to Locherbie Manor and leavers’ assembly, that she turned to baking during lockdown.

The 11-year-old decided to make different sweet treats in the kitchen and researched everything she could on YouTube.

Carly’s mum, Caroline, explained: “Through lockdown she researched it all herself watching YouTube videos and had her own ideas. What’s amazing is I don’t bake at all, so she didn’t have anybody in the house to help her, although I helped with putting it in and out the oven.”

And as Carly and the family were missing out on a trip to Disneyland Paris, she decided that she would cheer up her brother, Luke, by baking him a cake for his 13th birthday.

Carly, who is due to start Hamilton Grammar after the summer, took around took two days to create the perfect cake for her brother.

Caroline added: “Luke was very surprised, he knew Carly was making a cake for him but had no idea it would turn out so good until the big reveal. She shocked and impressed everyone. The response she received from family and friends was amazing!

“Carly wanted to give her brother the best birthday as we should have been celebrating in Disneyland Paris for his birthday but this was cancelled due to COVID-19. Luke has a very sweet tooth, so Carly knew exactly what to make for him.

“Carly has now planned out designs for her younger brother’s birthday cake, her dad’s and mine. There will be no stopping her now.”
