PRACHIN BURI: A schoolgirl was killed and 25 others injured when their double-decker bus slid off the highway in Na Di district during a field trip to Chanthaburi province on early Monday morning.

The accident happened on Highway 304 in tambon Buphram at about 4.40am. After sliding off the road, the bus overturned and came to rest in a roadside ditch. One schoolgirl was found dead inside the bus, and about 10 other passengers were seriously injured and sent to Na Di and Kabin Buri hospitals.

Nadi district chief Nopadol Ngamluea said the bus was carrying 20 junior secondary school students and 19 teachers from Bankoknamkiang School in Muang district of Nong Bua Lam Phu province. They were heading for the Kung Krabaen Bay Royal Development Study Centre in Chanthaburi province.

Police detained the bus driver for questioning. Pol Lt Col Mongkol Janploy, deputy chief of Wang Khon Daeng police station, quoted the driver as saying that he suddenly lost control of the bus while navigating a bend on the highway. The driver's name was not immediately released.
