A schoolgirl was forced to flee to safety after a man, allegedly carrying a pair of handcuffs, invited her to go with him as she waited for a bus in north London.

The girl, 14, ran home and alerted her parents who called police after a man reportedly approached her and made “inappropriate comments” in High Road Tottenham at 4.45pm.

Police said the girl was “very upset but physically unharmed”.

The Met said they found a 50-year-old man and arrested him on suspicion of attempted kidnap, possession of an offensive weapon and for failing to appear at court.

Police said he remains in custody and enquiries are ongoing.

Local organisation Shomrim said they were called to the scene within two minutes and located a man carrying a pair of handcuffs in the back pocket of his jeans.

They said they were supporting the girl and her family.

Shomrin–Hebrew for “guardians” or “custodians”– is a neighbourhood watch group which patrols the streets of north-east London, clamping down on crime, and protecting the Jewish population in Stamford Hill.
