A girl aged five has organised a “climate action” rally for primary school children to coincide with a planned walkout by pupils across London.
Sunday Bunting, a Year One pupil at Gayhurst Community School in London Fields, was inspired by seeing Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, 16, address Extinction Rebellion protesters in the capital last month.
Sunday’s rally will be after school on Friday — the same day as the latest Youth Strike 4 Climate school walkouts.
So far this year, three such strikes have seen tens of thousands of children take to the streets across the UK, calling on the Government to implement a “Green New Deal” to decarbonise the economy.
Sunday planned her rally so that pupils do not miss lessons. Parents and children from more than 20 primaries in east London are expected to attend.
They will meet at the playing fields near London Fields Lido at 3.30pm before marching to Hackney Town Hall.
The young activist told the Standard friends like the idea and are putting up posters around their school.
She said: “I’m inspired by Greta, she started the school strikes. When you speak up like a grown-up, you should be listened to like a grown-up.”
Her mother Jessica Stanley, 37, said: “All five-year-olds that I know care about fairness and the world so much, and I hope she always stays like that."
