At around 9.10pm on Monday, November 24, a 12-year-old girl was approached by a man at Marian Square in Netherton.

The man reportedly got out of his car close to the Fire Station and made inappropriate comments before he got off.

In the email to parents and guardians, it said that the man asked the girl her name, age and phone number.

The girl was left shaken and was picked up by family before police were called.

The man is described as white, 20-30 years old, of medium build, with black hair and wearing a grey short sleeved top and black shorts. The car is described as white and possibly a Citroen but police enquiries are still ongoing.

Community Policing Inspector Chris Taylor said: "This was an alarming incident and we're keen to identify the man. If you were in the area or passing in a vehicle around 9.10pm on Monday and may have captured anything on CCTV or dashcam, let us know. We have extra patrols in the area to gather any information and speak to the community.

"The girl did the right thing in contacting family who then informed us. If you experience any similar incidents let us know and we will respond."

The email, seen by the ECHO, said: "Last night 22/11/21 at 9pm a girl reported a man acting strangely and watching her by the bungalow chip shop, Marian Square, Netherton.

"The man walked past her and turned around and walked back towards her getting into a car. He drove past her towards the fire station and as she walked over the hill he was waiting in his car at the bottom of the hill.

"As she approached the car he put the window down, asked if she was ok, her name and age and asked for her phone number.

"She refused to give details and continued towards the fire station calling parents. The man drove away.

"The man was white with dark hair in his late 20's driving a white possibly Citroen car.

"Police have been informed."

Chesterfield High School headteacher, Mr Sexton said: “As soon as we became aware of this issue we wrote to parents and contacted the police, in line with our established protocols.”
