Two people, a 37-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remain in custody at this time, police confirmed.

Police sealed off a street near Hartley Brook Primary School at around 7.30am after being called to a semi-detached home, with ambulance services also at the scene.

Six children were taken to hospital but the two boys, aged 13 and 14, sadly died a short time later.

Four other children aged 11, 10, three and seven months are in hospital receiving treatment

Just hours after the incident, friends of the boys were seen arriving on the street close to where the incident happened.

One girl brought a red heart-shaped balloon to the house and it was tied to a lamppost by a police officer at the cordon.

Another two girls hugged as they watched forensic officers come and go from the house.

Family members of the children have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

Cause of death has not yet been established and a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

The school the boys attended, which cannot be named for legal reason, released a statement after the incident.

It said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm that two of our students died in tragic circumstances this morning.

"As this is a police matter, we are not able to provide any further detail at the moment.

"Our deepest condolences are with the family and their friends during this difficult time.

"We will be providing the appropriate support to our students and staff to help them to come to terms with what has happened.”
