Schoolboys who helped pensioner 'outweigh the gangster wannabes by miles'

A group of schoolboys who rushed to help a pensioner who had fallen in the street have been hailed as "a credit to Merseyside."

Owen Powell, 14, Nathan Merritt, 14, Josh Lamb, 15, and Nathan Gilfoyle, 15, were travelling home from Fazakerley High School on Thursday when they noticed an elderly woman lying on the pavement.

Owen, who is a volunteer for St John Ambulance Service, was the first to notice the woman through the bus window and got off at the next stop to help her.

The 14-year-old asked the woman what had happened, before he began checking her over and monitoring her blood pressure.

And a short while later, his three school friends arrived and took off their school blazers to keep the woman warm.

The boys put the pensioner into the recovery position and waited with her until an ambulance arrived.

Since hearing reading the news of what happened in the ECHO today, March 10, people from across Merseyside have praised the boys for doing such "a fantastic job."

Posting on Facebook, one ECHO reader said the boys have "restored my faith in humanity."

Jacqueline Ames, said: "Lovely boys, your parents must be so proud. It's nice to see we still have good kids around."

Cathy Rutherford, said: "Well done lads. There’s so much bad press about the youth of today, it’s so important to remind everyone of the many, many nice respectful ones that are still about, they outweigh the gangster wannabes by miles."

While Tina Evans, said: "Well Done to Owen and all the other boys who helped this lady.

"So proud to hear this story, when all you ever hear at the moment is about thugs and bullies.

"You are a credit to Merseyside. I always say there are far more good people than bad, who never get mentioned. Hope good fortune comes to you and your families. xx"

ECHO reader, Cheryl Wayne Kevan, said: "Well done lads, restored my faith in humanity - you are a credit to your families."

Lynn Khan, added: Well done lads what a fantastic job you did....very proud of you all and well done to your parents for bringing you up with such caring qualities..."

Owen said: "I was on the bus home and I saw an elderly lady on the floor.

"So I got off the bus and went over to her and asked what's happened, I'm a St John Ambulance first aider.

"She said that she'd fallen over but she had felt stable, so it sounded like she could have collapsed.

"I made sure her back was okay and that she was in a comfortable position and that she wasn't too high in temperature or too low."

Owen added: "There was already a few people there before I arrived but they didn't know what to do because they weren't experienced so I asked what happened.

"Then Nathan arrived and the other two lads. We had to wait around two hours for an ambulance to arrive."

Assistant Head of Year 10, Robert Boardman said: "I'm unbelievably proud of the boys.

"A consultant from Fazakerley Hospital stopped to help but he couldn't believe the level of care and knowledge the boys had so he let them take charge of the situation.

"He said their first aid training was great and they'd done a great job.

"Owen is a volunteer for St John Ambulance so he was leading the situation and carried out all the vital checks.

"They put her into the recovery position and used their school blazers to keep her warm."

Mr Boardman added: "Young people get such a bad rep but there are fantastic young people out there.

"The boys are lovely students who have a caring spirit which we need in our community.

"We are going to be giving them some rewards this week."
