Schoolboy wins gold Blue Peter badge for overcoming disabilities to help others during pandemic

A schoolboy from Tameside has emulated two of his biggest heroes by being awarded a gold Blue Peter badge.

Rory Hand, 14, of Ashton-Under-Lyne, has anxiety, sensory processing disorder (SPD), and hypermobility.

Despite his disabilities, Rory overcame his anxiety to help others with shopping and dog walking.

Along with his 25-year-old brother Conor, Rory also raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

Mum Sue said: "I'm very proud and it was a bit of a shock because I wasn't sure that they handed the gold ones out to children.

"Last year, he overcame his anxiety to help others with shopping and dog walking.

"Rory and his brother also did a 200-mile walk in the summer to raise more than £500 for Tameside Hospital."

There are eight Blue Peter badges in total and the CBBC website describes the gold badges as "very rare indeed".

Rory managed to collect all of the other Blue Peter badges for his efforts during the pandemic but Sue said that the gold badge is the 'icing on the cake'.

She added: "His heroes are Joe Wicks and Marcus Rashford and he saw them get a gold Blue Peter badge and he just really wanted one.

"I just applied to Blue Peter and I got the email last week to say he'd got one.

"His face when he opened it was just a picture and it's just the icing on the cake really. It shows that it's not just me that's proud, it's everyone else."
