Schoolboy who tragically drowned to be laid to rest in Celtic strip signed by players

Family and friends of a young schoolboy who died in a drowning tragedy have asked if Celtic players can sign a strip for him to be laid to rest.

Emergency services were called to the water at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire at around 4.30pm on Saturday, after Dean Irvine got into difficulty in the water.

Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, 11-year-old Dean could not be saved.

It is understood he was wearing a Celtic strip when the tragedy unfolded, and loved ones are appealing to players of his beloved club to sign a shirt for him, so he can be 'laid to rest in his favourite team colours'.

The family friend said: "Guys and girls big help needed asap, we are trying to get a hold/trying to get in contact with the Celtic team / owners to get a Celtic top signed by all the players if possible for young Dean, who passed away at weekend. Can people share this as much as possible as we want to have this young boy laid to rest on peace in his favourite teams colours."

The appeal has now been shared hundreds of times online.

A fundraiser has also been launched by the best friend of Dean's dad has set up a fundraising page online to raise money to help towards his funeral.

And over £1800 has been donated already.

Many local residents have spoken of how the youngster loved his cars and page organiser Marina Weir hopes to be able to hire a Bugatti on the day to give Dean "the best send off possible".

She wrote on the page: "Unfortunately today my best friend's son sadly lost his life.

"Wee Dean who was 11 years of age. We are looking to raise as much money as possible to hire a Bugatti for the day and help towards the funeral to give Dean the best send off as possible and the best memorial.

"Wee Dean was the most amazing little man and was always happy no matter what.

"Please, any sort of help would be nice and we would appreciate all the help from everyone.

"We love you so much Dean, fly high handsome boy."

A spokesperson for Celtic FC said: “The loss of Dean in this way at such a young age is truly a tragic event and the thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with the family at this very difficult time.

"We know Dean was a huge Celtic supporter. The club has already been in contact with the family and we will be delighted to help and support them with this request.

"We know Dean’s passing will be felt so deeply by so many and we offer our most sincere condolences.”
