Schoolboy who stabbed Leeds dad in street 'poses serious threat to public'

A schoolboy who stabbed a Leeds dad as he tried to get his son's bike back has been sentenced.

The boy, who was 15 at the time, was originally charged with attempted murder after stabbing the man in the back in Armley. This was then reduced to a lesser charge of wounding with intent.

Now 16, he has been found guilty of wounding with intent and has been given an eight-year sentence after being assessed as posing a serious danger to the public.

He cannot be identified because of his age.

Police were called to the scene in Whingate in the city just after 9pm on May 14 (Thursday) when they found the 32-year-old man had been stabbed, suffering serious injuries.

The Leeds father is understood to have approached a group when his son recognised them in the street and pointed out the defendant as the youth responsible for taking his bike.

Lina Remeikaite, 30, lives nearby on Whingate Avenue and told  LeedsLive at the time she heard a long-running commotion on her street before police arrived. She said the group had been loitering on her street "for weeks" before the stabbing.

"One of the ladies confirmed that they stabbed a guy," said Lina.

"Basically he just wanted to protect his son's bike. I think they tried to steal his bike and then the dad came out and tried to get the bike back."

The victim's son and and daughter were nearby as he approached the group and accused the defendant of stealing the bike.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary suffering a stab wound to his back, which had caused serious injury.
