Schoolboy to brave the shave in memory of great-aunt who passed away from cancer

A kind-hearted schoolboy is braving the shave in memory of his great-aunt who died from cancer.

Jack Irwin, from Stonehouse, has always been charity-minded but this time he wants to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support, a cause very close to home.

His mum, Lorraine Irwin, sadly lost her aunt Janice Gallagher, aged 50, to cancer before Jack was born.

During lockdown, the nine-year-old donated a lot of his toys and clothes to children less fortunate, as many families struggled throughout the pandemic.

And when he faces the chop on July 13, he will also donate his locks to the Little Princess Trust - who provide real wigs to children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment.

Jack's mum Lorraine and sister Faith Irwin will be there to support his efforts on the day.

Jack told us: "It's a good cause, it helps people hopefully get better and it helps kids that are sick. And hopefully help kids not lose parents too."

Proud mum Lorraine added: "Jack's always liked to help charities and one day he came in from school and decided he was growing his hair to brave the shave.

"It's a charity close to home, my auntie passed away from cancer a while ago but Jack never met her. He's seen how important this charity is and that's what's made him decide this.

"I'm so proud to see Jack do this, it's a great thing he's doing. I don't think cancer gets enough exposure, I don't think the charities get enough donations, so more exposure can help people help the charities where they can."

On the day, Blackwood Primary pupil Jack will go along to local hairdressers Split Ends, supported by his mum and big sister, Faith.

And his kind efforts won't stop there. Lorraine added: "He loves donating to charity. It doesn't matter what the cause is, Jack's always willing to donate and help out.

"Through Covid, we've been on Facebook pages helping families and Jack has donated a lot of his toys and some clothes, and his next task at Christmas is to raise money to buy food for the homeless. He's always on a mission."
